Dr Simon Blott  PhD MRes BSc

Dr Simon blott is a Scientific Consultant at Kenneth Pye Associates Ltd (KPAL). He has considerable experience of project involvement in coastal, estuarine and shallow marine environments throughout the UK and several countries overseas, both for research and consultancy applications. He has authored / co-authored >24 scientific journal articles and book contributions, and numerous consultancy reports. He has expert knowledge of GIS, analysis of topographic and bathymetric data, including LiDAR, aerial photographs, swath bathymetry and beach profile data; interpretation of wave, tide and meteorological data; application to coastal and nearshore morphological change and risk assessment; previous analysis of topographic and metocean data for numerous locations in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; production of publications.

• PhD, Royal Holloway, University of London, 2002 - Thesis title: Morphological and sedimentological changes on artificially nourished beaches, Lincolnshire, UK. (NERC CASE Award with the Environment Agency)
• MRes, Earth and Atmospheric Science, University of Reading 1997
• BSc (Hons. 1st) Environmental Science, University of Reading, 1996
• Fellow of the Geological Society of London, 2000-18

 

Key skills

• 22 years experience in coastal and estuarine geomorphology and sedimentology with application to beaches, estuaries, saltmarshes, sand dunes, soft cliffs, nearshore and offshore sand banks engineering, environmental management and habitat recreation
• Particular expertise in field surveying and sediment sampling, including RTK GPS; analysis of remotely sensed data, including aerial photography and LiDAR surveys using GIS software; analysis of environmental data, including wave, tide, sea level and meteorological data; analysis of topographic and bathymetric survey data; digitisation of historical maps and charts; laboratory analysis of sediments and soils
• Technical inputs, data processing and report writing; computer programming; desk top publishing software; website design
